Lookout Springtime

Purging is a concept that I have a challenge with. I think part of it is the lack of desire to make quick decisions about getting rid of things that I might need later. Setting that aside, it is time to focus on one area at a time and to get things that are no longer needed, distributed and out of the house.

My first project this Spring is to go through my husband’s desk. He has file drawers and desk cubbies full of items that no longer serve us. This will involve the typical organizational sorting.  First, get three large boxes. Mark one throw away. The next one is to donate, and the third one is to keep.

Some of the things I am finding are keepsakes that really only mean something to my husband. Since his passing back in April, I have not used or needed any of the items on his desk. I feel I have a responsibility to go through some of his things in case there would be items of value to his children or to organizations that he worked with.

I have been avoiding this task because frankly it will tug at my heartstrings and bring back to reality the fact that Michael is no longer with us. This will be the beginning of a purging project that will include his desk area, his closets, and his dressers. But I have to stop before I find myself getting overwhelmed.

The desk area will be my priority. This was the place where Michael spent his days. He did his writing and planning and explored goals for his future.

I want to make this a thoughtful cleaning out of his precious belongings. I expect I will dredge up some feelings of sadness and longing for what used to be and what might have been.

Just thinking about completing this project gives me a sense of lightening the load and making it easier to move forward. I have resisted this type of project for far too long.

The time is right. Look out springtime.
