The Dragonfly Speaks to Me

Traditionally, we do not choose our spirit animal. Instead, it must choose us.  Animals have often held a spiritual significance in our lives. Being aligned with specific animals is thought to exist throughout indigenous cultures.

The dragonfly is an “animal” that has shown up frequently in my life in recent years. For me, it represents a need to lighten up and to find joy in the act of living. I think the dragonfly is asking me to let go of my constant concerns about life and to feel the joy that is out there for me.

I have a tendency to look for things in other people that aren’t there. For example, I have a habit of saying “What’s wrong? Are you mad at me?” I have this feeling of inadequacy and distrust in myself in knowing what it really is that I am feeling or that I can bring to the surface.

There have been multiple times when I am questioning myself and my dragonfly will appear to me. One night, I was walking up the driveway feeling sad. When I reached the garage opener, there was a beautiful dragonfly sitting next to the opener. Seeing this elegant creature immediately brought my mood around and helped me to see things from a different perspective.

I find that I am skeptical to a fault when I look at why it seems that I am frequently waiting for the other shoe to drop. I’m often waiting for disappointment to follow a happy time.  The dragonfly symbolizes a need to trust and delve deeper into my emotions. The dragonfly reminds me to investigate my feelings and to learn some of the causes of these emotions.

Over the years, I have been called upon to be adaptable. Each new state and new home have called on my ability to be able to transform and start anew. I look to the dragonfly to guide me in each transformation.

To me, the dragonfly symbolizes change. This includes change in the perspective of self-realization. Change can also be brought about by the deeper meaning of life. The dragonfly reminds me to spread my wings, reach for new thoughts and ideas and use the wisdom of maturity.  The dragonfly resonates with me as my spirit animal. It appears to offer guidance, and to remind me of my life purpose.
