Details Worth Remembering

For so many, their wedding day is one of the most memorable events of their life.  For me, with my swiss cheese brain, the complete details are a bit lacking.  I do, however, remember a few details worth mentioning.

Wedding shoes

rememberingI was adamant that I would NOT go barefoot at my reception regardless of how my feet felt.  None of the shoes I found were anything that I liked, so  I found a simple pair of white satin heels and applied beaded appliques.  I hate it when brides are wearing a beautiful gown and then proceed to either barefoot or wear stupid comfortable shoes.  So – even though my feet were killing me, I kept my wedding heels on for the duration of the day.  (My toes were numb for the next week in Jamaica)

Wedding Bulletins/Maps

remembering

map was drawn line by line on the computer from scratch

When we were getting married, I was already working in computers, so I decided I was going to save some money and print my own church bulletins.  The paper was the only thing purchased and I did the rest myself.  I think I did pretty well, if I do say so myself.

The map included in the invitations was also drawn line by line on the computer by me.  I didn’t have a pen that was linked to the computer.  Microsoft Paint was used to draw the map with a combination of straight and curved lines and text.  Once again – I’m pretty impressed with my talent at this.

Invitations

In addition to the bulletins, I wanted to make labels to address the envelopes instead of hand-writing all of those addresses.  Grandma Is said that was strictly forbidden.  The wedding colors were green and white and I wanted the invitations addressed in green ink.  This was before the day of all of the pretty ink colors and the only green pens we could find were thin-tipped markers.  After printing a bunch of addresses, the marker tips got a little blunter and some invitations looked like they were written with a Crayola marker.

Groomsman with a black eye

The guys all got together on the morning of the wedding to play basketball and during an aggressive scrimmage, one guy went up for a lay-up and his elbow came down in my brother-in-law’s eye.  His glasses were knocked off and it resulted in him having a black eye for the event. The photographer’s wife used some makeup to help camouflage it.

Taking pictures before the wedding

I was prepared to take pictures of the wedding party after the actual event, but the photographer stated that he preferred doing the pictures before the ceremony.  This turned out to be a fantastic idea as my soon-to-be husband burst into tears when I walked into the room.  It took a few moments for him to compose himself enough for the pictures to be taken.

Walking down the aisle

Memories

Dad’s all serious after I tried to lighten the mood

As dad and I were walking down the aisle, I wanted to lighten the seriousness of the moment. So, I began reciting a poem he used to share with me.

“They walked the lanes together, the sky was covered in stars.  They reached the gate in silence, he lifted down the bar.  She raised her blue eyes to him, there’s nothing between them now.  For he was just a farmer’s boy, and she, a jersey cow.”  I barely got the first 2 lines said when dad said “Ssshhh – stop that”

Hot dogs for dinner

Many people will insist on having something special to eat for their wedding dinner.  Well, when deciding what to have for our first dinner as husband and wife, it became known that the chef at our venue was familiar with my soon-to-be husband and thought it would be hysterical to serve him a hot dog for his wedding dinner.  Being the jokesters that we are, mom and I quickly agreed.  So on the big day, as everyone was served a lovely dinner, my new husband was served a large hot dog for his meal!.

Beautiful flowers

remembering

Original First Evangelical Lutheran Church – so beautiful

The flowers designed by Gene from Beaver Floral were absolutely amazing.  There were all white with green accents to coordinate with the bridesmaid’s dresses and the groomsmen’s ties.

I guess as I write this down, I’m remembering more than I first thought I would.  It turns out it was a rather memorable day after all.
