The Labor Day Hunt

Some of my more memorable vacations were those spent on Labor Day Weekends.  It was always a huge project for me since I was the one who seemed to instigate this event.  During the earlier weeks of summer, my family would go camping.  I could have stayed in my tent for the duration of the summer.  I just loved our camping experiences.  I loved having people around me to enjoy, and I loved being outdoors no matter the weather.  To me this was summer.

Our favorite area to go camping was in Door County.  Having tried a few other areas we always came back to this area.

It made it bearable to come to the end of our yearly camping excursion because we were planning on one last fling for the summer. Labor Day Weekend.

Since Labor Day can be iffy weather we all decided that renting a cabin would be safer and a new experience.

This involved an extensive search for the perfect cabin for our family and sometimes friends.  I would spend hours upon hours scouring the Door County Vacation Guide.  This area was our favorite place to enjoy this last hoopla for the summer.  This was a challenge.  Our group usually had a count of around at least ten people.  This required a rather large cottage, which creates a problem in itself. Then there was a problem with the fact that everyone wanted to bring all of their furry friends.  With our immediate family alone we have at least 6 dogs.  When you contact a renter they oftentimes will agree to one dog, maybe two, but six?  So, we would bring the whole pack and on the off chance that the owner would be coming to pick up a rent check, my oldest daughter was given the task of taking all six dogs on a very long walk at a moment’s notice to avoid any problems.  They never caused any damage or any problems, but the thought of having this many dogs was certainly a detriment to anyone wanting to rent to us!

One of our favorite cabins was on the Green Bay Side of Door County.  It was a 150-year-old log cabin.  We called the dust cabin, even though upon arrival we thought we should clean it and found that it was clean, its appearance was deceiving.  All the furniture, including rugs, was old having come from an antique store.  This consisted of many, many taxidermied, animals including bears, strange birds with missing legs, and other hideous animals.  You might say What made this cabin so special?  Well, the kitchen was so cozy being built with birch logs creating shelves, and holding together the kitchen island.  There was a sauna in it, a living room, a sitting room, a bath of course, and a large front porch facing Green Bay.  This porch reminded me of a cowboy movie and I could just imagine a couple of horses being tied up outside.  Then there was a huge drop-off leading to the water.  The steps and railing leading to the water were also made of birch logs. We loved to go hiking as there were really neat areas in the woods where you could enjoy the season. It was one of a kind.

These memories are so special and I will treasure them forever,
