Happy Hallothanksmas

I am definitely a holiday purist and can’t stand the fact that stores start putting out Christmas decorations before Halloween.  It actually aggravates me to hear Christmas music before Thanksgiving.  I’m the type of person who wants to enjoy each holiday before moving on to the next event.

In my eyes, each month should be used to celebrate its own holiday. For the entire month of October, enjoy the pumpkin spice everything, the changing of the leaves, the hayrides, the pumpkin patches.  Carve the jack-o-lanterns and put out the witches and cobwebs.  Take the time to celebrate the fun that Halloween can bring.  Let your inner child out and dress up to hand out candy.  Then, when October is done, it’s time to move to the next holiday.

Starting November 1st, it’s time to put away the silliness and reflect on your blessings.  Take the time during this month to reach out to family and friends and let them know how much they mean to you.  Decorate with fall leaves, turkeys, and pumpkins.  Take some time to write down what you are grateful for and share some of your time or talents with others.  End this month by enjoying time with family and eating great food.  One thing to absolutely avoid is Black Friday shopping.  I think this event takes away the specialness of the season and feeds into the craziness that Christmas shopping produces.

Finally, we come to December.  December 1st is when I think the Christmas season can begin.  I don’t agree with putting up Christmas decorations before that.  It’s just too soon.  And don’t get me started on hearing Christmas music before this time.  Hearing Christmas music before December will actually make me leave a store.

I realize the retail stores have to be ahead of the holiday to make the most sales, but I just can’t get into the mood for Christmas until after the other holidays have had their turn. So – now that it’s December – I can finally get into the spirit!  Merry Christmas!
