Mortified at the Dance

I was a sophomore and starting my first year of senior high.  We were having a dance at the beginning of the school year.  I was very interested in a senior guy that I had met, but we weren’t going out.  He and I both decided to meet at the dance and I was very excited.

The dance was held in the cafeteria with the tables moved out of the way and the lights dimly lit.  Couples were slow dancing and my senior guy asked me to dance.  I happily accepted and while we were dancing, something horrifying happened…

Let me take you back to the beginning of the night.  Mom had been grocery shopping while I was getting ready for the dance.  When she wasn’t paying attention, our dog Annie grabbed a box of cherry jello and proceeded to chew it up under the library table in the living room…  on the brand-new cream-colored carpet.  Mom was hysterical.

There wasn’t anything I could do while Mom was trying to clean it up, so I proceeded to go to the dance.  Mom stayed home and did everything she could to clean up the huge bright red stain.  In frustration, Mom decided to take a drive to calm down.  (so she wouldn’t beat the dog)  During this drive, she was in a local subdivision and needed to turn around at a dead end.  She pulled into a driveway and when trying to back out, she turned too quick and ended up in the culvert.  Now she was stuck.

At that same time, a multitude of senior high boys poured out of the house and proceeded to get her car out of the ditch.  Now – Fast forward back to me at the dance…

As I was dancing, one after another senior guys would come up to me and tell me their part of the story about how they helped my mom out of the culvert earlier in the night.  I was mortified.

The night continued on and after I got home, I was laying in bed, thinking about the dance.  Mom came in to say goodnight.  She sat on the edge of my bed asking me about the evening.  I smiled and said to her “So… you want to tell me about what happened tonight?”  She paled and stammered “What do you mean?” with a terribly guilty look on her face. “How did you find out?” she blurted.  I smiled and related the story.

Boy – it felt good to be the one with the upper hand for once!
