I Am Trixie Belden
Being young in the 50s was a whole different ball game than being young today. I remember 3 different pastimes. First was playing cowboys and indians with the neighborhood boys. Second was getting out our jump ropes, pogo sticks, and stilts and the third was pretending to be Trixie Belden and her sidekick named Honey from the Trixie Belden mystery series.
I loved waking up on a crisp summer day and putting on my “dungarees” aka Jeans and setting out to find my friend around the corner. Her real name was Deb. She was known in our pretend world as “Honey”. I was always Trixie since I had blond hair. We could spend an entire summer day making up scenarios and acting them out. We would pretend that the garage was a cabin in the woods. We would pretend that someone had broken in and stolen precious possessions. Then we would walk through scenes and make up dialog until our mystery was solved.
I had almost forgotten about my “Trixie Belden” days. As I think back on them I am transported to those days when the weather wasn’t cooperating, so I couldn’t ride my bike. Many days the kids I usually played with were busy with their families. I enjoyed curling up on the couch with my books and letting my imagination paint scenes of fun and excitement. The Trixie Belden Series was focused around mysteries. These books led me to the Cherry Ames stories and then to Nancy Drew. I sometimes feel like these people totally existed in my real world, even though I only connected with them through my reading.
I am grateful for having this release and this opportunity to open up my world and to share it with interesting and vibrant people even though they were only fictional. I would sometimes feel sad when I finished a book because I was getting into the lives of the girls and young women I was reading about.
Reading is still a favorite pastime for me. I still love the feeling of being transported to another place or time even if it was only in my imagination. These days have aided me in becoming a lifetime reader. Thank you Trixie Belden. I enjoyed the time we spent together.
