I Remember When
I have never been a morning person. I look forward to Spring, even though I lose an hour with Daylight Saving Time. I do enjoy the extra daylight hours in the evening. When we hit the “fall back” time, I enjoy the extra hour of sleep. Although, once daylight saving time ends, it gets dark so early that I feel like I’m living in Alaska.
Supposedly, it should be lighter early in the morning helping the kiddos have a bit of daylight for the trip to school. I’m not sure that playing with the clock makes up for the lack of workable daylight at the end of the day.
I thought I remembered when Daylight Saving Time first started. Actually, it had several starts and stops back to 1784 when Benjamin Franklin first came up with the idea. What I remember is in 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson made it official. It had been pending since 1942 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It was thought that more sunlight in the evening would reduce the nation’s energy consumption. I was surprised that something as basic as time could be altered by a few government officials.
If the truth were known, in my opinion, I’d rather see those government folks work on banning assault rifles or making our roads safer to drive on. The selection of items to work on seems strange to me. Is it because the fallout from playing with time is more acceptable to the masses?
Frankly, life goes on whether we have daylight saving time or not. We can shift our focus to enjoy the early sunshine as much as we have been enjoying the lingering daylight hours at day’s end.
I think it might be time to test out becoming a morning person so I could join the doers of the world. The early birds seem to get the worm, while the night owls get a negative wrap. Vitamin D aside, I can adapt to whatever the earth circling the sun has in store for us. Carpe diem!
