Let’s Ask Mom

I was always a people pleaser as a young child.  I never wanted to disappoint my parents with my actions.  For example, on a Sunday morning when I was 6, I was ready for church before everyone else and was told I could go outside if I didn’t get dirty.  I was found a few minutes later, sitting in my little lawn chair by the side of the road, patiently waiting for the rest of the family.  See…  people pleaser.

As I got older, I started challenging Mom.  I remember one instance where I was sassing mom and she began to chase me around my bedroom.  Over and around my canopy bed we went.  I finally stopped and when Mom tried to slap my mouth, I grabbed her hand to stop her.  She yelled, “Let go of my hand!”  I shouted back “Are you going to try to slap me again?” She retorted, “Yes!” I replied,d “Then I’m not letting go!”  That argument ended in a stalemate.

There have been a few disagreements with Mom over the years since those high school days, but for the most part, Mom is the one I have always gone to for life advice.  What color should I paint the kitchen?  Let’s ask Mom.  What kind of plants would grow well over here?  Let’s ask Mom.  Should I get another dog?  Let’s ask Mom.

It’s only been in the last few years that I’m starting to make my own decisions about decorating, gardening, and other such items, but I still check in with Mom afterward to verify my choices.  Mom’s input is my reassuring touchstone.
