Happy with Hallmark
Watching a few hours of TV in the evening is enjoyable for me. It relaxes me and lets my mind wander. When my husband was alive we watched crime dramas. NCIS was a favorite. We also loved Castle and the various forensic science dramas.
Once I was widowed and living alone my taste in TV completely changed. I would try to watch the dramas that we had always watched. I had trouble following the stories; they seemed dark and even scary.
One night, I happened on the Hallmark Channel. The stories were light and predictable. I found myself enjoying the development of the characters in these romcoms. Nothing too serious happened, and in the end, I had a smile on my face and a good feeling in my heart. This program style suited my mood and fulfilled my need for light entertainment.
I find it a bit embarrassing to say that I binge-watch Hallmark movies but I do. If I could compare them to anything in print, it would be the stories I read growing up. Nancy Drew, Cherry Ames, and Trixie Belden. These stories had the same light storyline and predictable endings.
The Hallmark settings are visually appealing. The cities are quaint and inviting, and the countryside is colorful and filled with warm visual settings. I literally can imagine being in the movies. The characters are often the same people I have met in other settings. The stories incorporate fall, winter, Christmas, and all of the holidays.
I don’t subscribe to any of the streaming services so I have missed out on dramas like Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, and Outlander. I hear bits and pieces of these movies but have yet to make the move to view them.
I’m currently in the process of analyzing my TV needs. My bill for my TV service is horrendous and I seldom watch any of the channels. I enjoy watching Sports broadcasts including the Badger games and Packer games.
To tell the truth, I find TV watching to be an addiction. I can spend time I don’t have watching programs I don’t care about. I’m certain I will reach a point where I have seen all of the Hallmark offerings. When this happens, I will go back to books on tape or simply reading. These days, Podcasts are another option. There is a podcast for every interest. Maybe binge-watching TV is overrated. Time to explore my options.
