Window to Another World

I remember the day our first TV was brought into the house. It was a square box with about a 12-inch screen.

The first thing that showed up was a news story from New York. It was in black and white and I can remember being very curious about it. It felt like a window to the world.

This small TV was soon replaced by a Hoffman EZ vision set. It was a console and even had a push button on the top that would change the channels. I remember spending mornings watching shows like Romper Room and Howdy Doody. They both started around 1953 when I would have been four years old.

The show that captured my interest at this time was the “B-Square Ranch Club Show”. The MC was Gabby Hayes and he would introduce various cowboy movies. Roy Rogers and Trigger, The Lone Ranger and his horse Silver, and Tonto, his Indian sidekick. I remember being a member of the B-Square Ranch Club at an early age. I would carry the membership card in my Daniel Boone wallet that I received for Christmas. The slogan of the club was:

Be Happy

Be Healthy

Be Friendly

Be Fair

Be Helpful

Be Handy

Be Trusty

Be Square.

Being square in those days meant that you were strong in your beliefs and honoring the value of being kind to others and helpful to your parents. I made sure that I memorized those words and recited them to myself frequently. I loved the old Western shows. Eventually, when The Rogers Show was added to the mix, it portrayed modern-day Western life

tv memoriesAs time went on, I enjoyed watching old movies with Cary Grant, Rock Hudson, Doris Day, Claudette Cobert, and numerous others. During the summers, Mom would be at work and would leave me chores to do. I would watch movies for as long as I dared and then hurried around the house to complete my assigned chores before Mom came home from work.

TV has been a part of my life ever since I can remember. In recent years my husband and I watched crime dramas like Castle, NCIS, FBI, and many other programs about solving crimes with forensic science. The CSI series was a favorite.

Since my husband passed I have been addicted to Hallmark Movies. They have fun storylines, no blood or violence, and a little conflict in the last 30 minutes that is always resolved before the end. It’s easy, mindless entertainment without much stress. For two hours, I am involved in the life of a pro golfer, a wedding planner, an innkeeper, a retreat owner, or the challenges of a single mom. Right now that suits me just fine.
