Scarred for Life
As usual, our 2 labradoodles had managed to break out of our fenced-in backyard and I hadn’t had a chance to fix it. They needed to go out and I didn’t want them running away so I asked Jessi to let them out on a leash. She put Lucy on a 20-foot leash and Lily on a 6-foot one and started to open the sliding glass door.
The door was only partly open when Lily bolted outside and pulled Jessi along for the ride. Unfortunately, with the door only partly open, Jess was slammed into the edge of the door – face first.
I heard screaming and I thought “What the hell? Get a grip!” and then I went to the patio to see what the commotion was about. To my shock and horror, there was blood dripping down her face and neck. She had hit her chin on the edge of the patio door and it had split open. There was a triangle flap of skin hanging down and I knew it was time for stitches.
At the emergency room, we were helped by a wonderful doctor who told us how lucky she was that the injury was where it was. The scar was going right along her jawline and would hardly be noticeable. Any higher up and we would’ve needed a plastic surgeon.
That was in 2017. Now in 2024, the scar is hardly visible unless she lifts her head and points it out. Also, the fence is now fixed so we no longer need to let out the dogs on a leash – much to Jessi’s relief.
