Errant Cough Drop

I’ve loved Wild Cherry Cough Drops for years. When I needed something because I had a dry mouth, I would pop in one of my favorite drops.

I’ve always enjoyed being a bank teller. Meeting different people and helping them with their transactions was one of my favorite parts of working in banks.

When I first moved to northern California in the 1970’s I worked in a Bank in the Napa Valley. It started as a small one branch operation and grew rapidly. It was the local bank and the customer service was amazing. Our Board of Directors consisted of local business people. Each of them had their own businesses or a position in the community that added to the professionalism of the bank.

The Chairman of the Board owned a very successful appliance store. He enjoyed coming to the bank every day to make bank deposits. We all respected him and made sure that he was treated with the utmost in great customer service.

I developed allergies while living in the valley. I could never tell if I had a cold or if it was just allergies. As long as I felt fine, I continued to go to work. I would pop one of my favorite wild cherry cough drops and carry on as normal.

One afternoon, the Chairman of the Board came in with his daily deposit. He often came to my window because we got along well and he appreciated the good service. On this day I was having issues with coughing. I started working on his deposit and started to cough. All of a sudden, the red oval cough drop flew out of my mouth and landed squarely in the middle of his deposit slip.

I was horrified. I paused a second before deciding what to do next. I quickly reached down and picked up

the offending drop and popped it back in my mouth. I raised my eyes slowly to meet his and to test his reaction. We both burst into laughter. Mine brought tears. I was so relieved that he could find the humor in the moment. I said “Well that takes care of my most embarrassing moment” and finished the deposit. I thanked him and he turned and walked away chuckling all the way to the door.
