I Am Who I Am

giving yourself permissionIt has taken many years to get me to where I am.  In the past, I let myself be dictated by what others thought of me (or what I thought they thought of me), I focused on the wants and needs of everyone around me instead of what I wanted or needed, and I let others decide how I should think and feel.

In more recent years, I’ve decided to give myself permission to do the following:

  1. Change my mind about how I feel
  2. Let go of things I’ve outgrown
  3. Accept my body as it is today
  4. Make mistakes in front of others
  5. Focus on what truly matters to you
  6. Say “Yes” and “No” when I mean it
  7. Let go of others’ expectations of me
  8. Start over if I want a new beginning

It’s only taken 50-some years to get to this point, but if I could encourage others to give themselves permission to do these things earlier in life, they would find themselves so much happier.

Keep in mind that I’m not perfect at all of these items. For example – accepting my body as it is today.  Not really there yet.  I don’t want to accept my body as it is.   Also, I have a hard time focusing on what truly matters to me.  I tend to work too much and don’t spend as much time with my adult children as I would like to, but that is something I plan to work on.

I have given myself permission to let go of others’ expectations of me.  I am allowing myself to finally have my own opinion about things like decorating, gardening, and how I spend my time.  I’ve also given myself permission to start over.  I don’t have to be defined by my past.  That’s not who I am anymore and I can be whomever I want to be.
