The Sleeping Porch
School is out and summer is here which, when I was a kid, meant it was time for Lisa and I to sleep out in the patio every night! This was one of the best parts of the summer.
For many years, Mom and Dad didn’t believe in air conditioning, so during the summer months, the only source of cooling down was to have the windows open. Some nights could get very uncomfortable in my bedroom. I can usually sleep through anything, but I hate being hot.
This is where the glory of our screen porch came in. Lisa and I would grab a blanket and a pillow every summer night and make ourselves comfy. Lisa always got the sofa and I got the loveseat. I can still remember the feeling of the cool summer breeze on my face while I was wrapped in a blanket. It was perfect.
Summer sleepovers also were spent in the patio. Janelle and I would grab 2 outdoor chaise loungers and move the coffee table to set up our summer bedroom. It was the perfect sleeping spot.
After Lisa moved out, I continued sleeping in the patio, but it wasn’t as much fun without her. Then I began working and it was too much of a hassle to also move my alarm clock out to the patio each night, so my sleeping porch once again became just a porch.
I no longer have a screen porch. Now, I have a 3 season room instead. I think this name is deceiving because this room is way too hot in the summer and in the winter, it’s too cold. That would make it a 2 season room, which is about the only time that room is useful.
Maybe I should think about converting my 3 season room into a screen porch and once again enjoy a sleeping porch!
