Bullshit!

Have you ever thought about when and where you have been the happiest?  For me, the first thought that comes to mind is the time I spent with my kids and mom playing “Bullshit”.

If you’ve never played this card game, here is how it goes.

Object of the Game:

  • To be the first player to successfully play all the cards in your hand.

Playing the Game:

  • Shuffle and deal all 52 cards out amongst the players (some players may have more than others).
  • Beginning with aces, the first player places a card (or cards) facedown on the table and announces the number of cards he has played (e.g., 2 aces, 3 fours, 1 queen, etc.)
  • Play continues around the table sequentially (aces, twos, threes, fours, etc.), with each set of cards being placed on top of the ones before them.
  • If anyone believes a player is bluffing, they can call “bullshit” after that player lays down his card(s).
  • The person who played the card(s), must turn over the card(s) they played to show whether they were lying.
  • If the cards are indeed what the person said they were, the person who called “bullshit” takes the entire pile of cards and adds them to his or her hand.
  • If the person was indeed lying, he takes the entire pile of cards and adds them to his or her own hand.
  • Play resumes

Winning the Game:

  • You play until someone plays their last card(s).
  • Anyone who notices that a player is out of cards will likely call “bullshit.”  If the card is indeed what the player said it was, they are the winner.

It was during our 2-week vacation at our family cottage in Door County.  The “big kids” were staying in our rental and later at night – that’s where all the activity happened.  Mom decided to come over and see what we were doing and that’s when the fun began.

Someone pulled out a deck of cards and decided we were going to play bullshit.  Mom had no idea how to play, but she quickly caught on.  The kids and I decided she was one of the best at playing the game.  We all were laughing hysterically as Nathan would claim to have something in his hand and Mom would slyly call out bullshit.  Nathan would inevitably have to pick the entire deck of discarded cards.

I can’t wait for vacation this summer, so we can sit around, play more games with my kids, and have a great laugh!
