Spring Organizing
I have never been a big advocate of cleaning in general. It’s not my favorite thing to do. So, when asked what I do for Spring Cleaning – you will see a glazed look on my face.
As a child, we always cleaned on Saturday mornings, but I don’t ever remember being subjected to a major Spring Cleaning undertaking. Maybe this is an idea from years ago. Maybe some still abide by that idea. I’m not sure. All I know is that I don’t do it.
Instead of Spring Cleaning, I tend to do a little bit each week. The best part of any cleaning process is the organization part of it. I love putting things into boxes and bags and labeling to my heart’s content. Organizing my life gives me tons of warm fuzzies.
In addition to the joy of organizing, I also like to purge things. In my head, I think “Does this clutter make my butt look fat” (That’s the title of a book by Peter Walsh) Each week I try to do a 27 fling boogie (idea courtesy of The Fly Lady) With clothes, I’ve pruned down my wardrobe to fit in a standard size closet – no bigger than a standard sized doorway. My shoes have been paired down to fit neatly in my closet. If I get another pair, I’ll eliminate an old one. My Tupperware cupboard only contains bottoms that have matching tops. My cleaning supplies under my sink all fit neatly into storage bins. My towels from college no longer reside with my good towels. You get the idea.
Each week, I take an area and look at what can be purged, pruned, and organized.
If I had to pick the next area that needs some TLC, it would be my garage. I began the process of Spring Cleaning my garage last fall, but there is more to go. In the attic of the garage, there are old flower pots that haven’t been used in over a decade. The shelves on the side of the garage still have old rags for washing the car – I now go to the car wash. There are kids’ toys along the far wall – my youngest child is 22.
After the garage, the next area would be my supply of blankets. I have 5 large (105 qt) storage bins of blankets that haven’t been opened in over 5 years. Do I really need all of those blankets? Probably not.
Other than that, I’m doing pretty well. Now if we focus on the cleaning instead of the organizing – well – I tend to come up a bit short. Maybe my Spring Cleaning needs to focus more on the Cleaning part of the idea.
