Atari Love

atariI can still remember the Christmas that I got my Atari 2600.  I think this is where my love of technology began.  I received the game system that morning and as soon as the presents were opened, I had it set up on our basement TV.  But with my luck – by the time I was ready to play with it – it was time to get over to Grandma Is’s house to celebrate the holiday with the remainder of the family.

Over at Grandma Is’s house, I received a driving game for my Atari system, and the night couldn’t end quickly enough.  I wanted to go home and try out my new toy.

We left Grandma’s house around 11 pm and I immediately went to the basement to play for a bit.  The first game I plugged in was Pong.  I was mesmerized by the “ball” bouncing around the screen and trying to keep it within the lines.

I loved being able to choose different games and the idea of being able to play with someone else (even though Lisa wouldn’t play with me).  The screens would change colors and the blips and beeps had me hooked.

The next game I plugged in was Night Driver.  This game allowed you to drive like you were behind the wheel and was actually the first of its kind. It wasn’t my favorite game, but that was probably because I sucked at it.

There were other fun games that I would acquire during later holidays such as Pitfall, Adventure, Frogger, and Space Invaders.  I even took my Atari to college and plugged it into a 9” TV screen.  That made playing it a little more challenging.

I still have this game system, in addition to a Nintendo system, a Game Cube, and others.  Thinking back on how much fun I had with my Atari – maybe I should go home and plug it back in?!
