To some people, the presence of family brings stress, challenges, and dread. They don’t like to be around family because of differing opinions or hard feelings. I have difficulty relating to those people as my family is the exact opposite. I couldn’t imagine life without them.
Togetherness
My entire family lives in the same town. Mom, Dad, Judy (mom’s sister), Ken (dad’s brother) and his wife Carol, my cousin Andrea, Lisa (my sister) and Craig and their 3 kids, and my 3 kids. We love to spend time together even though we can often drive each other crazy.
During the summer, about 14 of us all go to the family cabin to enjoy a 2-week vacation together. The cabin is a 1400 sq ft, 3 bedroom, 2 bath cabin. When I tell people about this, they look at me in amazement that we do this every year altogether. They usually say, “I could never do that with my family”.
Security
To me, family is security. They are people that love me for who I am. People who will tell me the truth, even if it’s uncomfortable. They are the ones who take care of me and I take care of in return. When I need someone to talk to, it’s my family that I look to first.
Memories
Some of my best memories involve time spent with my family. Lisa teaching me how to play the flute, Mom helping me to decorate my kids rooms, Judy being my mentor with life challenges, Dad taking me fishing, playing board games with my adult children, Saturday conversations with Carol, and spending time at the cabin with the whole entourage, just to name a few.
Each family member is important to me in their own way and without them, life would not be the same.
