Towel Trials

towelsThe topic of towels causes me to dig deep into my imagination. Being creative here is almost out of the question. Towels are, after all, the quiet accessories of our bathrooms. Still, they play an important role. With the right colors, patterns, and textures, they can enhance the entire space — complementing the paint, the floors, and even the fixtures. Chosen well, they add warmth and charm. Chosen poorly, they can drain the life out of even the most handsome room.

Beach towels are a different story altogether. These I actually enjoy. I like having a beach towel that complements my swimsuit and cover-up. This isn’t a requirement, of course, but it does make the whole fashion statement a little more fun and intentional. I love my current “big cat” towel with my leopard print swimsuit top.

Towels also serve a surprising number of purposes:
– Old, worn-out towels and washcloths become excellent cleaning rags.
– Microfiber towels are perfect for screens — computers, televisions, and phones alike.
– A quick spill can be handled by any nearby towel when paper towels are nowhere to be found.
– Paper towels are still my go-to in a sudden emergency, though I do try to use them sparingly for the sake of the environment.

Towels also come in a wide variety of sizes, and here I have strong preferences. I like a standard-size bath towel for bathing and washing my hair. I enjoy wrapping it around my head afterward — a little ritual of sorts. The oversized bath sheets, however, don’t work for me at all. There is simply too much fabric for the way I like to use a towel.

My greatest towel frustration, though, is keeping them clean, soft, and pleasant to use. I’m told not to use fabric softener because it makes towels less absorbent. But without a softener, they become stiff and scratchy. I’ve tried white vinegar in the rinse cycle; it removes odors beautifully, but it still doesn’t deliver that soft, fluffy feeling I secretly hope for.

In the end, towels may not be glamorous, but they quietly touch our lives every single day, drying our hands, warming our shoulders, rescuing us from small household disasters, and even helping us feel just a little more put together at the beach. Maybe that’s their real charm: they ask for very little attention, yet they serve us faithfully, absorb endlessly, and always show up when we need them. Perhaps we could all learn a thing or two from a good towel.
