At the time, my sister Judy was living in California. When I went to visit her, she announced that she was taking me to have my colors done. I had always worn cream, tan, brown—safe colors I could hide behind. Never, in a million years, would I have put on bright colors like red or purple.
We went to a salon where they draped fabrics of every shade across me to see what complemented my skin tone. When the right colors were placed near my face, my features lit up. It opened a whole new world for me. I was told I was a Winter, which meant I should wear clear, bright colors instead of the muted shades I’d worn all my life. Pink was especially flattering.
I remember a peach-colored silk skirt-and-blouse outfit I adored. But every time I wore it, I looked drawn and almost sickly. It turns out the problem wasn’t the outfit—it was the color. I should have been choosing pink, not peach. That alone made a huge difference. I even learned I could wear black—a color I’d never touched before.
Still, after years of wearing Autumn shades, it was hard to fully accept. So when a friend of mine invited me to tag along while she and her sister had their colors done, I went—mostly to see if the Winter diagnosis was really accurate. I walked in wearing beautiful orange plaid wool pants and an orange sweater. The moment I stepped through the door, the instructor looked at me and said, “Sandy, you’re wearing all the wrong colors.” I couldn’t believe it. But after another round of draping and testing, they confirmed once again: I’m absolutely a Winter.
What frustrates me today is when someone goes through the color-analysis process—supposedly to help them look their best—and then laughs it off and goes right back to wearing whatever they’ve always worn. So many people dismiss the whole thing as silly. But if you walk into a room full of people, you can clearly see who is wearing their best colors and who isn’t.
Why wouldn’t you want to look the best you possibly can? And it’s practical, too—you save money because you’re no longer buying a rainbow of shades that don’t flatter you.
It truly does make a difference. The proof is in the pudding!
