Adding Kayaks to the List

When I was a teenager, I loved to go canoeing. We would head out on Beaver Dam Lake as soon as the spring sun warmed the air and work on our tans. It became a ritual for the eight of us each year.

At Girl Scout Camp Blackhawk, canoeing was a major activity, and I loved every moment. We spent hours learning how to paddle correctly and steer accurately. Time passed, and after I moved away from home, I never had the chance to continue canoeing or to try kayaking.

When I returned to Wisconsin in 2014, kayaking had become a popular sport in town. There was a rental spot at Waterworks Park and a launching area that made getting in and out of a kayak simple. My sister and I would pass it often on our daily walks and always said, One day we’ll try it.” But we never did.

Then Sandy received two kayaks for her birthday a couple of years ago and brought them to our family cottage in Door County. I’ll admit, I was a little intimidated to take my first adventure in a kayak on Lake Michigan. Tonight, though, as we discussed summer plans, Lisa mentioned she has two kayaks at her home. Now, that piqued my interest!

I’ve always wanted to follow the shoreline, gliding past the lakefront homes, seeing them from the water’s perspective. Having spent years waterskiing, I’m comfortable on the lake and eager to experience it in a new way.

Kayaks seem more stable than canoes, and I imagine the fun of paddling alongside friends, enjoying both the peace of the water and the laughter of good company. They’re also lighter than aluminum canoes, which makes launching and landing easier at the new sites around town.

Water sports have always been part of my life, canoeing, motorboating, sailing, and now, I’m ready to add kayaking to the list. This summer, I plan to finally dip my paddle into this new adventure.

Life offers us so many ways to rediscover joy, and sometimes the simplest ones are waiting right in front of us. For me, kayaking isn’t just about paddling; it’s about reconnecting with nature, embracing new experiences, and making memories on the water with the people I love. Maybe this summer, I’ll finally trade “someday” for “today.”
