Highway Karma
I’ve never been a big believer in karma. The idea that the universe somehow keeps score, handing out little cosmic rewards or punishments based on our behavior, feels more like wishful thinking than truth. If karma were real, I wouldn’t be the one getting pulled over on the highway while cars fly past me doing ten or fifteen miles faster.
I’m not a reckless driver, but I do drive a bit over the speed limit—just enough to keep up with traffic, not enough to raise eyebrows. But it never fails: I’ll be on a wide open stretch of road, someone will zoom past like they’re trying to launch into orbit, and moments later, it’s me seeing flashing lights in the rearview mirror. The speeding ticket always has my name on it, not theirs.
And as I sit on the side of the road, clutching my ticket, watching the same aggressive drivers disappear into the distance untouched, I wonder—where’s their karma?
People say, “They’ll get theirs eventually.” But will they? From where I’m sitting, “eventually” seems a long way off. Maybe they’ll sail through life, never getting caught, never facing the consequences, while I’m the one dutifully renewing my plates, checking my mirrors, and somehow ending up with points on my license.
The truth is, life doesn’t seem to run on moral balance sheets. Sometimes, the jerks win. Sometimes, the cheaters get ahead. And sometimes, the cautious driver is the one paying the fine.
So, no, I don’t think the universe is keeping tabs. I think we like the idea of karma because it makes an unfair world feel a little more just. But if you ever see me pulled over while a sports car zooms by untouched, feel free to honk in solidarity. No hard feelings. I just don’t expect karma to catch up to them anytime soon.
