How TV Brought Us Closer

When I first met Craig, I was absolutely anti-TV. My small television was banished to the sunroom, nestled between a loveseat and a jungle of plants. We’d snuggle up and pop in a DVD whenever we spent time together.

After we got married, I caved and got cable—and a bigger TV.

Fast forward several years into our marriage. Craig often retreats to the basement family room to watch football or whatever sports game, while I putter around in the kitchen, read in the living room, or work on a project upstairs.

Then came the pandemic in 2020.

We were desperate for entertainment. One day in April, Kadon and I headed to Target with the goal of picking up a couple of family games. After browsing through this and that, I finally said, “Just grab them all. What looks fun?”

We left the store with an armload of games and puzzles. The puzzle? 1500 pieces, we got the edge done and not much more…what a disaster. The games? Fun. But what really hooked me during the pandemic was TV!

Craig and I picked a show. We started with Outlander, moved on to Game of Thrones, and eventually landed on Yellowstone.

Each evening, we’d head downstairs and watch one episode. (Okay, sometimes we’d sneak in a second because it was that good.) And while we watched, we’d give each other foot rubs. Now, you might not be into feet, but Craig LOVES it, and I find it pretty awesome too.

There’s something undeniably relaxing about watching an engaging story unfold while soothing each other’s tired feet. It’s our little ritual, a cozy corner of time that feels both luxurious and comforting.

Who would’ve thought that my TV boycott would end with binge-watching epic tales and bonding over foot rubs? I guess that’s what makes marriage fun—you never know where life will take you, or what you’ll binge-watch next!
