Spiritual Vignettes

religionMy spiritual moments have not come in huge dramatic scenarios. They instead show up as small vignettes. It may be me saying a quick prayer when I need help from God and moments later I have an answer or solution.

I can remember driving home in the rain recently. I was scared to death and prayed out loud for the Lord’s help. I laughed as I said out loud “Jesus take the wheel”, and within seconds a warm feeling of calm came to me and my fear dissipated. I felt God’s presence as I safely navigated through the storm. When I got home that evening, I dropped to my knees and said a prayer of gratitude.

Years ago, I lived in California, where I attended a seminar by Dr Jack Holland. He talked about his life. He had fought in the Second World War and had inoperable shrapnel buried in his chest. He went through a horrible life experience which he shared with us. His wife and twin daughters were killed in a tragic car accident. He didn’t think he could bear it. Within months, he developed cancer surrounding the shrapnel in his chest. He went to see his father who was a doctor and said that he was afraid and was dying. His father said “Jack, you began dying the day you were born. Take control of your life and move forward. “

A short time later, the shrapnel worked its way out of his chest. He began gaining back lost weight and his cancer went into remission. This story hit a nerve with me. It told me that I was in charge of my life and my well being. This was many years before I began studying the power of mindset.

At one of the seminars I attended in California, we went through a process of healing. It included meditation and sharing our pain and anger. During the periods of quiet reflection, the background music was playing Pachelbel’s  “Canon in D”. Many hurts were healed during this process. For months after this experience, each time I heard this song, I went back to the reflection of the hurt that was released throughout those days. It proved to me the power of the spiritual connection we had experienced over those days.

I can’t claim one religious belief. I’m not necessarily Presbyterian or Catholic. I have studied many teachings over the years. With each year that passes, and with each spiritual event I experience, my belief in a supreme being and my God grows stronger. There is no question in my mind of their existence.
