Dessert Disasters

dessertIt was wedding season and the family was getting ready for a bridal shower.  Everyone was doing their part.  Someone was bringing a few appetizers, someone else was bringing a salad and I was asked to bring the dessert.  “No problem!” I thought.  I should’ve known better.

Unfortunately, it did turn out to be a bit of a problem.  That side of the family has a tendency to actually plan events ahead of time (like more normal people do).  They aren’t the “spur of the moment” type of people that I was raised with.  So when I thought of it as “No problem”, it wouldn’t have been a problem if the event were the next day.

Again, unfortunately, the event was still a month away.  In those days (1988), I didn’t have my phone to write down notes or set appointments and reminders.  It didn’t occur to me to write myself a note.  After all – how could I forget something like that?!

The day of the event came and I went over to help set up some decorations and was asked “Where is the dessert?”  “What dessert?” I asked blankly.  “OH… MY… GOD!”  I suddenly remembered that I was supposed to make and bring a special chocolate sheet cake (Judy’s recipe) as the dessert.  I was horrified!  How could I forget that?!  (I blame it on Nathan because I was 5 months pregnant with him and he sucked all of my brain cells out during that time)

I sped home as quickly as possible and began making the special dessert that I had promised.  This time however, the cake didn’t come out light and fluffy, like it always has before.  Hhhhhmmmm.  I looked over the recipe again and noticed the problem.  In my haste, I had forgotten one ingredient.  Baking soda!!  My wonderful dessert looked like a flat chocolate pancake.  With no time left to start again – I frosted the chocolate pancake and went to the shower.

Everyone said they loved the dessert, but my day had been ruined.  I felt like I had let everyone down.  And I was never asked to bring dessert again.
