The Notebook

romanceI had a hard time thinking of a movie that I would deem romantic.  To figure that out, I had to determine what I find romantic.  What gives someone that feeling?  Is it having someone do thoughtful things for you?  Is it having someone speak sweet nothings to you?  Is it having someone who thinks of nothing but you?

I actually had to lookup “Top Romantic Movies” and it hit me…  The Notebook.

The movie description from Wikipedia is:

“In 1940s South Carolina, mill worker Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) and rich girl Allie (Rachel McAdams) are desperately in love. But her parents don’t approve. When Noah goes off to serve in World War II, it seems to mark the end of their love affair. In the interim, Allie becomes involved with another man (James Marsden). But when Noah returns to their small town years later, on the cusp of Allie’s marriage, it soon becomes clear that their romance is anything but over.”

The storyline is great, but what I loved about the movie is realizing that Noah is sharing this love story with Allie who is now suffering from dementia. She is enthralled with the story and toward the end, she has a moment of clarity and recognizes him.  While she is still thinking clearly, they dance to their song “I’ll Be Seeing You”.  Shortly after, the dementia relapses and she panics about a stranger touching her and has to be sedated.  Noah then suffers a heart-attack and is treated in the same nursing home that Allie is in.  After recovering, he sneaks into Allie’s room in the night and she instantly recognizes him.  They kiss and fall asleep holding hands.  In the morning, they are found to have died peacefully in each other’s arms.

Oh my.  How romantic.  To find someone who cares so deeply for you that they would spend their days with you even when you can’t do anything for them in return.  I think it’s so romantic that they had such an endearing love that nothing could separate them. The fact that Noah wouldn’t leave Allie’s side for any reason…

Now that’s romantic.
