I remember following his journey on Christmas Eve on TV or the radio. It was so exciting to know where he was, and when he would be in our area. I felt that sleep would never happen, but for some reason it always did.
On Christmas Eve our family, my mom, dad, two sisters, and I, would go to my Grandma Bauer’s house. A lot of the relatives on my mom’s side of the family were there and Grandma gave out her gifts to all of us.
Then, of course, we were surprised and thrilled that Santa had found our house and left lots of wonderful presents. I even swore that I heard reindeer hooves on our roof. (Great Imagination)
When I got older I don’t remember how I discovered that Santa was a wonderful imaginary figure (mom and dad), and having a younger sister allowed me to continue with this little fantasy. I was able to enjoy all the excitement and mystery of Santa by prepping her with the stories of Santa, his elves, and, of course, his reindeer.
Today it seems hard to continue this fun fantasy with little kids. There is too much social media which seems to take over and makes it hard to make believe. Also, you have to explain why there are so many Santas in the world. It just gets quite complicated, and there is always someone who is up to date on reality and spills the beans.
Ah, to be little again, and enjoying innocent, fun, imaginative happenings.
