White Elephant Waste
When it comes to gift giving, I try very hard to come up with something that will mean something to the recipient. Not everyone goes through the same amount of thought that I do though. I can’t say that I’ve ever received a really horrible present except when it comes to participation in a White Elephant gift exchange.
There are some versions of the White Elephant gift exchange which can be very fun. Through work, we began doing a virtual one where during the event, a name was randomly drawn and they had the chance to pick a gift. When the next person’s name was selected, they had the chance to steal a previously opened gift or pick a new unwrapped gift. A gift can only be “stolen” up to 3 times. The exchange continues until the last person picks. At that point, the first person has the opportunity to keep their gift or steal from someone else. Most people pick some really fun things, but there (of course) are a few silly ones thrown in for good measure.
The type of White Elephant exchange that I think is completely frivolous is the one where you buy random gifts and they are typically gifts that no one wants. I don’t understand why people do this kind of exchange because it seems like a waste of money and you end up getting something that you will probably just throw away. What is the point? For a few minutes of laughs? I don’t see the value.
So – if you are thinking of inviting me to participate in a frivolous White Elephant exchange – save the invite and ask someone else.

I also don’t like the idea of buying something no one wants.
