I was planning on staying home, but my best friend Janice insisted I had to come with her to Mary’s party. Mary’s family was having a party for their exchange student and all the girls were going to be there. I didn’t feel like going but resigned myself to an evening of socializing. The last thing I was looking for was romance.
It was always fun going to Mary’s house. We always did the typical teenage girl stuff. Talked about boys, made prank phone calls, gossiped, and other general silliness.
The entire family had also invited friends over, so there were people of all ages – from young teenagers to adults. Everyone was talking, laughing, and enjoying themselves. Then I noticed that there were boys there…
Suddenly, the activities with the girls were very unimportant. When asked to play a game of Connect 4, I eagerly agreed. From that moment on, I had no idea what the girls did or where they were. My only interest was where the boys were.
After a few games of Connect 4, I went and sat in a brown leather recliner and one of the boys came up to me and asked if he could sit next to me. In my head, I was thinking “Um – this is a chair made for only one person”, but my mouth said, “ok – sure”. As we sat there – Mary’s dad stated “Oh that is too cute. I have to get a picture of that!” And he snapped our picture.
We sat there for a little bit chatting and when I went to get up, I realized that someone had put gum on the back of the chair and it was now stuck to my shirt. The lovely boy told me that if I got some ice and froze the gum, I could get it right off. He was very helpful and sweet. I was hooked.
Shortly after this, it was time for me to go home and mom came to pick me up. I definitely didn’t want to go. A few weeks later, it was time for school to start and I was at the high school looking up my class schedule and desperately trying to figure out who that sweet guy was I had met at Mary’s. He had told me his name at the party, but I was so nervous and excited that it didn’t register in my head. Right as I was looking over the list, Jance walked past me and said “His name is…” I looked around quickly at her and lied “What do you mean? I’m not looking for anyone.”
At this point, my memory fails me, but within a month, the special guy and I were together at another friend’s house and when we were alone in the family room, he looked at me and asked “If there was someone that thought you were amazing and would worship the ground you walked on… would you go out with them?” I looked at him and said with a smile “Oh my gosh – YES – tell me who this is!!” We then began dating and the rest – as they say – is history.
