Lessons Learned

Time has taught me to not take life for granted, and to make the most of each and every day.  This is not an easy task, but I do try this exercise on a daily basis. 

I am a fixer.  An immediate gratification kind of person.  If something is wrong I want to fix it right away.  I have learned that being patient and letting some things work out for themselves is often the best way. Things will work their way out without me meddling. This was a hard one to work on I might add.

Time has also taught me to not be afraid of new situations such as mingling in a crowd, meeting new people, and being sociable.  I was always quite shy when I was a kid, and when you don’t interact with other people you tend to miss a lot of friendships and acquaintances.

I have learned not to take myself so seriously.  I have always been a perfectionist and this is really hard on a person.  It is impossible to have everything perfect and to strive for that is tormenting.  It prevents you from enjoying life.  I relate this to Christmas.  When you want a Hallmark kind of Christmas, with everything perfect, you miss the whole point of the season.  In the past, all I feel I do is shop, wrap presents, bake, cook for the holiday meal, clean and decorate. I miss all the importance of enjoying the holidays. There are so many wonderful events planned by the church, craft fairs, concerts, and other festivities.  Last year I was in the hospital at the end of November and it was a real wake-up call.  I had to hand over a lot of my responsibilities to my kids, Michelle, in particular.  She had to host which I usually do, I put up very minimal decorations (unheard of for me), and had the best Christmas ever.  I was able to enjoy my family like no other year and was actually calm and happy.

So, I feel time has taught me a lot of positive things, and I hope I will continue to benefit from those ideas and will keep forging on.
