Have you ever had the question in your head, “What has this taught me?” That’s how I tend to look at my younger self. As Walt Disney once said – “The past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it, or learn from it.”
Here are some lessons I’ve learned:
- Don’t be afraid of the unknown – so many events in my life were chosen because it was a known commodity or something I was familiar with. I went to college in Eau Claire because Lisa did first and I was already familiar with the campus. I lived with girls from Beaver Dam because I knew all of them and didn’t have to meet someone new. Who knows what my life would’ve been like if I had tried something new and gone to school elsewhere or even if I had been a bit more adventurous and lived with someone new.
- Take care of yourself first – If you don’t take care of yourself first, you won’t have the ability to take care of others around you. It’s like on an airplane – in case of emergency, put on your own air mask before putting the air mask on your little ones. If you don’t have air, you won’t be able to provide air for your child. How can you make others happy if you aren’t happy yourself?
- Money doesn’t grow on trees – As a child, I always felt that money was in abundant supply. As the years pass, I’m reminded daily that money actually doesn’t grow on trees like I wish it did. As one of my kids often says – “Adulting isn’t hard, but it sure is expensive.” It’s important to always live within your means and not rely on credit cards to buy the things you want.
Some of these lessons I’ve learned the hard way, but at least I’ve learned. Each day is a new day and a new chance to learn from the day before. So I choose to believe that Walt knew what he was talking about. Thanks Walt!
