Naked, But With the Right Shoes

nakedI always say I would go naked if I had the right shoes to wear! That may be a slight exaggeration, but I do love shoes.I feel like my shoes have represented three distinct phases of my life.  When I was in High School, my shoes had to be “cool”. As a twenty-something working woman, my shoes had to be professional, classy, and the most current style. As I’ve grown older, my shoes are all about comfort. It certainly helps if they’re somewhat stylish but not totally a requirement.

Let’s look at these life segments one at a time.  In High School, I wore penny loafers, tassel loafers, saddle shoes, and occasionally, a classic pair of flats. The shoes had to match my purse and compliment my “outfit”. The clerks at Beaver Bootery loved me because I had to have different pairs in different colors.  I asked one time if I could take a pair home to get my mom’s approval and the clerk told me I was such a good customer, I could take the whole store home on approval if I wanted!

nakedIn my 20’s and 30’s, my view of the proper shoes changed drastically.  I had to have just the right heels, preferably 2 ½ to 3 inches in height and I needed a variety of colors.  Taupe was not OK if I needed a tan. Black was not OK if I needed Navy and white was never acceptable in my shoe wardrobe.  This made traveling difficult because I needed a pair of shoes for every occasion and outfit color change.

As I grew older, I found that if my feet hurt, I was crabby and found it impossible to ignore my painful feet.  I also could not have a good time if my feet hurt. I started wearing unique leather low heel shoes or athletic shoes made in name brands to go with a myriad of looks. They had to have high arch support and a comfortable bed of memory foam. I often took along an extra pair of shoes just in case.

So, you would assume that my current closet consists of brown and black shoes built for comfort but you’d be wrong. I have a very difficult time letting go of my favorite shoes.  Who knows when I may need to revert to one of my prior styles? I still have several pairs of loafers, a pair of saddle shoes and flats. My closet hides at least 15 pairs of those lovely heels I talked about and then I have too many pairs of low-heeled leather shoes and multiple pairs of fun, comfortable athletic shoes.

So, if you see a naked woman strutting down the street in a great pair of shoes23, just smile, say “great shoes” and walk on past!
