The Carpet Saga

carpetingI had always loved carpeting.  New carpeting, that is.  It is so clean, smells fresh, and looks beautiful and pristine.  Then it happens – life.

We finished our basement in I would say a rather luxurious way (in a hunting sort of way, that being my husband’s hunting lodge!)  It is fully carpeted with a very good carpet.  We have been able to do this because we have been one of the lucky homeowners who have never had a water problem in their basement.

Well, while bringing this new, beautiful carpet to its designated resting place, our dog, Annie, decided that it would be a good idea to pee on it.  I was furious, horrified, and felt crazy.  My new beautiful carpet will never be the same again, new and fresh.  Well, many years have gone by, many more unplanned accidents, and it is still going strong.   Having carpet on an otherwise cement floor is both warm and inviting.  A new shampoo would be good at this point, but it is still looking almost brand new.

Now, having said I love carpet, I love it even more after the old carpet is pulled out, after discovering beautiful, unblemished wood floors hiding underneath.  When we moved into our present house, it had that lovely color of olive green icky carpet.  Well, this was removed and replaced with a very plush cream carpet, which extended to the dining room as well.  We had that carpet for many years, knowing it would never wear out because of its construction.  But something happened to that carpet in areas that were not traveled frequently.  It kind of turned a light peach in those places. So, one fine Sunday when the hubby was not home (you see, he loved carpeting), his mother and I proceeded to remove tons and tons of cream carpet.  Wow, what a difference.  Lucky for us, the flooring underneath was a beautiful oak color, looked brand new, and wha-la, a new look, and I was loving it.  I had a large area rug made in cream with a blue streak running along the edges to match the decor, and it is still that way to this day. I have to say, carpeting will never have a place in my living room again.  It is so easy to clean.  It feels clean and fresh most of the time.  (When dogs are excluded).  I still have carpeting in my dining room because my husband raised the floor over the oak flooring, and it would be a rather large job to correct this.  Besides that, I don’t like wood on wood because of scraping, and the cleanup on the carpet has never been a problem.

So, long story short, get rid of old carpet, or any carpet for that matter.  It just holds all the dirt of the world as you will notice when you shampoo it.  It is easier to clean hardwood floors, in my opinion, and it creates a beautiful ambiance.
