Just Give Me Waves

Lake MichiganI just love, love, love the ocean.  My last memory of being on the ocean was off the coast of Virginia.  We had gone to my son-in-law’s sister’s wedding.  We went as a family. When we arrived, I was invited to sit with the ladies and talk.  When I walked into the room, before me was this great expanse of windows, and through those windows was a full panoramic view of the ocean.  I couldn’t sit still for a minute, excused myself, grabbed my granddaughter, Aubrey, who was about four years old, and headed straight for the ocean.  We lay on the bare, warm, wonderful sand, enjoying all the little sand crabs scooting around and diving into their little holes.  Then she took a lazy afternoon nap.  Aah, the memories of that wonderful ocean lapping up waves and lulling us to sleep.

Now, I have a cottage that is right on Lake Michigan.  This, now, is my ocean.  Truthfully, you can’t tell the difference except that with the change of seasons comes a very different effect on Lake Michigan than on the ocean.  Cold, snowy weather will do that.  When you stand on the shore of Lake Michigan, it looks the same, sounds the same, and is a wonderful place to sit back and just be.   Lake Michigan has the same wave effect; you can not see to the other side, the sounds of the waves are all encompassing, and in plain words, it is a wonderful place to be.

When we were renting cottages, I always wanted a bedroom that faced the water so that I could be lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves and the smell of the water.

This is truly my happy place.   Did I say I LOVE THE OCEAN (OR MY MINI OCEAN, LAKE MICHIGAN)?

The moon showers are incredible, as well as splendid sunrises.

I must admit one fault I have with the ocean is that there are sharks, dolphins, creepy creatures, you name it.  While jumping in the waves with our clothes, we spotted fins.  Dear lord, there are sharks.  Thankfully, they were dolphins, but how would I know?

A sweet memory I have regarding my love of the big water characteristics was that I could be heard saying at any given time, “I would do anything just to hear the sound of the waves”.  So, one night after coming home from a meeting, I was met with a dark house.  I went upstairs to the bedroom, where I assumed Art was.  Upon entering the room, I discovered soft candlelight everywhere, and he had gone to ShopKo and purchased a tape of the ocean waves, which he had playing.  What a romantic and thoughtful gesture.  He repeated, “You said you would do anything for the sound of waves.”  It was a special evening not to be forgotten.
