Banking on Karma

karmaI spent most of my working life in banking, not because it was a deep passion or childhood dream, but because it was what I could do without needing more education. It was practical, stable, and something I could count on. I also loved interacting with people and helping them solve their problems.

But here’s the thing: I gave my whole heart to those jobs. Even when it felt like “just a paycheck,” I showed up with care for my coworkers, my customers, even the regulars who only came in to chat for a few minutes. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was investing more than dollars and cents. I was putting kindness, patience, and respect into the world, one transaction at a time.

Years later, after losing my banking job (and it wasn’t the first time), I expected to feel broken or bitter. But instead, people started showing up. People who knew me well supported my feelings and, at the same time, suggested that I needed to look at this as a blessing in disguise. Family stepped up and shared that they felt that I had the potential to do something greater. They encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and to look at the new opportunities that have developed since I chose the safe work in banking.

So, just maybe it was time to correct my mindset and think of this as an opportunity to reach out for something that would end up being my dream job. Maybe I wasn’t bitter because I was looking at this change as an opportunity for growth. I’d given my all, but my all wasn’t enough. Maybe my karma was leading me in another direction.

That, to me, is karma. It’s not always flashy. It’s not about revenge or rewards. It’s about the energy you carry, the way you treat people when no one’s watching, and how life finds a way to mirror it back to you when you least expect it.

That may just be the topic of another post.
