Beware of the First Step

fallingDo you ever wonder why when you get older you seem super clumsy?  Well, for some reason, this is happening to me on a rather frequent basis and I don’t like it one bit.  I think I am just not paying attention to where I am going.  Being active can also help with this problem and I need to step that activity up a lot.

A rather significant event was a couple of months ago.  My grandson wanted to go see an open house because he was interested in purchasing a home.  I was invited to go along. While walking up to the house I was talking, not paying attention, and tripped on the first step right off the sidewalk.  Unfortunately, even though there was an arbor to grasp, of which I didn’t take advantage, I fell flat on my face on the cement sidewalk.  My daughter told me to get up and it wasn’t until I got up that I became aware that I had blood dripping from my face.  I had scraped my forehead and bumped my nose so hard that blood was oozing from it together with many scrapes.  This caused both of my eyes to become black and blue.  Then to top it off, my chin was also scraped and was bleeding.  Well, to say that this freaked my family out was an understatement.  Brad said we needed to go right home. I said, “Absolutely not!”  We had come to see this house and we were going to complete this mission.  Besides, I love touring homes and I have priorities, and going home wasn’t one of them.

The weird thing about this was that not a single person who saw me at the open house said anything like “Are you okay? ” or “How did that happen?”  We thought that was very bazaar behavior for anyone who saw me as It was pretty obvious that I was hurt.

Since this happened on the same day that I had just come from my orthopedic surgeon, Dr. P., to be treated with a sprained wrist and broken little finger from a previous fall in my garage, we thought it would be funny to go back to my him and say “How about this?  Did I do a good job now?”  I got the feeling he already believed that I was being abused at home as he said several times, “I’m watching you”.

Now if you see this strange person walking, constantly looking down at the ground and not where she is going, it is probably me trying to stay upright.  So, best not to interrupt me as I am in deep concentration and trying not to break my neck.
