See You in the Fall
“Have a nice trip!” “I’ll see you in the fall!” These little phrases with double meanings used to be funny to me until I started experiencing unwanted falls with no explanation.
I was taking the dog out before going to bed. She had finished and we were walking slowly toward the front door. Suddenly, without warning, my foot caught under a metal frog sculpture in my bed of morning glories. The next thing I knew was that my head was on the front step. My glasses had flown off. My shoulder was up against the riser of the front porch and I was laying on my side. I lay there for a few minutes to see if I had hurt myself. Finally, I got up slowly and did a quick body inventory. Nothing seemed to be broken except my pride and everything was sore and stiff. The next day I felt like I’d been hit by a bus.
Several days later I was cleaning a watermelon in the kitchen. I walked to the waste basket to throw away the rinds and my foot slid on Watermelon juice on the floor. I sprawled out over the kitchen table with my left arm holding my weight from falling to the floor. My shoulder hurt horribly.
A few days ago, I was sitting at the kitchen table eating breakfast. I got up and walked toward the sink to put my dishes away. The next thing I knew, I was falling to the floor. I caught myself with the kitchen counter and slowly ended up on the rug in front of the kitchen sink. The dog came over and licked me a few times and then went to lie down in the hallway. Once again, it took a while to get up.
So what in the world is the reason that I am having issues staying up on my feet? The good news is that there don’t seem to be any lasting injuries. The bad news is that I am currently sporting the ugliest bruised 5 toes on my left foot. I don’t know what I hit but whatever it was, I did a good job.
We used to tease my mom when she would trip and fall. I remember telling her to pick up her feet. Well Mom, if you can hear me, I’m right there with you. “See you in the fall.”
