Pond Paradise
Tossing this question over in my head I would say the most significant time and place that I have been the happiest was during the births of my two children. I don’t think anything can quite top those events.
On a different note, I remember a very happy moment a few years ago. I had always wanted a fish pond in my backyard. I didn’t know where a good placement would be, but after losing a large tree in our yard, it became obvious that this would soon have a pond in that location. After scouring many, many books and pamphlets on the construction of fish ponds of various sizes I decided on one that would work in our backyard. Now to create this I asked for the help of my husband. He had a day off and I was excited that he would do his project for me. He called me at work telling me that he had no idea how to do this and would have to wait for me to come home. I was really disappointed but was totally surprised to find out that he was just kidding. He had put this pond together and did a fantastic job. He added boulders and flat rocks in all the right places and I would never have done such a great job.
Now for the fun and happy part. I purchased lots of plants that I put in and around the pond. I got up at 5:00 a.m. on the most beautiful summer morning. The birds were singing, the dew was still on the grass, the bugs hadn’t even woke up yet, the weather was cooperating with the sun just making an appearance, and I had a fun project to create. As I sat by my pond doing what I like best, creating something beautiful, I felt so happy to be alive and able to have this moment. I had purchased perennials, annuals, and rock garden flowers and just kept planting. The end result was the highlight of my summer garden and I have enjoyed it for many years after that.
My pond changes from year to year, but that first time was such a happy and fulfilling moment for me.
