Sleep Procrastination

sleepThere isn’t much that can rouse me in the morning. Not my Alexa blaring music at full volume, nor my Sonic Bomb alarm clock with its bed shaker attachment under my pillow, nor my Pavlok electrocution watch that zaps me. Suffice it to say, I’m NOT a morning person.

On the other hand, there are things that keep me awake at night. Sometimes, I simply can’t resist binge-watching a TV show or movie. Other times, it might be a craft project that I can’t seem to put down. Lately, it’s been work. In my job, my to-do list is perpetually growing, and despite my efforts to tackle it, for every task I cross off, two more appear.

I have the luxury of working 100% remotely, which I love, but it also makes it harder for me to step away from my computer. When quitting time rolls around, I tell myself, “I’ll just finish up this one last thing and then I’ll be done.” The next thing I know, two hours have passed. I haven’t fed the dogs, I haven’t had dinner, I haven’t done anything except work. At that point, I’ll get up to attend to a few nightly necessities, only to think, “But tomorrow will go so much smoother if I just finish this one last thing.” So, it’s back to my computer yet again, and before I realize it, it’s 2 am and I’m still seated at my desk, working!

It’s clear that balancing work and life isn’t easy. Sometimes, work takes over, but I know I need to take care of myself too. So, as I say goodbye to another late night turned early morning, I promise to work on finding a better balance between work and rest. Each new day brings a chance to do things differently, and maybe, with some effort, I’ll start to feel more energized and focused in the mornings. For now, I’ll cherish those quiet moments and keep striving for that balance we all need in life’s crazy ride.
