An Affair to Remember

romanticWhen I think of romantic movies, I want to feel weak in the knees and relate to the relationship that I am witnessing on the screen. There have been several movies that I consider to be extremely romantic. Dirty Dancing, The Bodyguard, and Pretty Woman are near the top of my list. The one movie that takes the prize is “An Affair to Remember” with Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant.

I have watched this movie several times and each time it transports me into the settings of the story. First of all, there is the romance that develops over a shipboard cruise across the Atlantic. Both characters are engaged to other people and Cary Grant’s character is quite the lady’s man. Deborah Kerr’s character wants nothing to do with him. He feels just the opposite.

Over time the relationship changes and the two of them realize that they are attracted to each other and they fall hopelessly in love. I love the way the characters deal with the issues at hand. They are respectful and yet totally committed to each other.

romanticThere are romantic scenes aboard the ship, and on a side trip to visit Cary Grant’s grandmother. She is a lovely European woman. The scene is beautifully staged with Deborah Kerr singing as his grandmother plays the piano. The look on Cary Grant’s face is one that melts my heart.

I could go on forever describing this beautiful movie. I think it’s one you should see if you have a love of romance. It is old fashioned in the way it handles love. The staging, the locations and the story line carry me to a world that includes love and honor and tragedy. Even that is conquered because of the deep felt feelings of the characters. The movie is sweet, charming, and entertaining. I can only say that it is one that I can watch over and again and never tire of it.
