More Holes in My Head

piercingAll my friends were getting their ears pierced and I felt like the odd man out.  I swear I was the only girl in my school that still had my earlobes intact.  I begged and pleaded with Mom to let me get them pierced, but it did no good.  She was a rock.  It wasn’t happening.  Finally, it was Christmas and Mom and Jackie had conspired together to gift each other’s daughter with a coupon for “Two more holes in your head”.

Two years went by and I was very happy with my single pierced ears.  Lisa and her friends were upstairs in the bathroom and as usual, I had to snoop to see what they were doing.  To my surprise, they were piercing each other’s ears!  Well – I was determined that I wanted to participate.  Lisa was not happy and insisted that I get out.  Once again, I did a bit of begging and pleading and she finally conceded.  She said, “If you make one little peep – I’m going to stop”.  I froze.  There was no way I was going to show any sign of hesitation.

She cleaned my ear off and took the sharp stud earring, placing it a little bit above my first hole.  She started pressing the stud into my ear and only got part way before she said that she couldn’t finish.  Jill jumped in and said she would finish.  Lisa stepped aside and Jill quickly shoved the earring the remaining way through my ear till we heard (and felt) the final POP.  Yes!!!  I did it.  I felt so grown up – I was one of the big girls.

I don’t remember what Mom ever said about my second hole.  It must not have been too bad because I still have that piercing and have never had any trouble with it.

Once I got into High School, I remembered how the girls had pierced my ear before and I still had the very sharp stud earring, so I figured it was time to make yet another hole in my ear.  I marked where I wanted the new piercing and shoved the stud through my own ear.  That made 3 holes in my left ear and only 1 in my right.

My last piercing was in the top cartilage of my left ear.  I was only 17 when I decided to have this done.  I went to the local Herberger’s store where they offered free ear piercing.  They asked me if I was 18 and I said yes.  They never asked for ID.  I asked if they could pierce the upper cartilage.  They replied that they thought they could as long as the piercing gun could fit over that part of my ear.  It did.  The employee at Herberger’s pierced my ear with no complications and I went home.

The next day, while shopping at Herberger’s again, I noticed a sign by the ear-piercing station stating that they do not do cartilage piercings.  I thought, “Hhhhmmm – I hope no one got into trouble because of me!!”

I haven’t done any other ear piercings since that last one and I’ve never had any trouble with any of them.  Four piercings in my left ear and only one in my right.  Some make think that looks unbalanced.  I think it fits me perfectly!
