Dance Motivation

danceDuring my childhood, every Saturday was cleaning day.  It was the last thing a kid wants to do on the weekend, but it was not an option.  Everyone had their certain jobs, like my job was to dust the entire house and Lisa’s job was to vacuum everything.

Mom knew that we didn’t want to be cleaning and therefore she would try to motivate us and get us “in the mood” by turning up the music on the living room stereo as loud as it would go.  We would be listening to things like Barbara Streisand’s album from The Main Event and Helen Reddy’s album Ear Candy.  These were not the typical songs that kids in their tween years would be listening to, but after years of hearing them on repeat every Saturday, they became engrained in my head.

To this day, when I’m trying to get something done around the house, I have to turn up the music so I can be distracted and dance my way through it.  As we were reminiscing about this topic, we turned on a few of our cleaning songs, and Lisa and I can still sing them completely.

I’ve made a playlist that I use today when I’m cleaning, but my list now has more than just Mom’s songs on it.  I have songs that remind me of Lisa when she was in high school (Rush), songs that were played at my best friend’s house by her older brother (Supertramp), songs from when I was in college (90’s country), songs from Disney, and additional songs from the 70’s.

Suffice it to say – if you want me to get something done that I don’t necessarily want to do – put on some good dance music and get out of the way!
