Dad’s Benediction

There is so much to be thankful for…that is what this holiday is all about. It is also a time to remember and honor memories.

My dad has a favorite blessing that he recites at family gatherings. (I have googled it and found no references.)

Let us bow our heads in prayer.

Lord God, gracious and merciful,

We acknoledge thy bountiful goodness towards us and give you thanks for our daily bread…

so richly provided by thee.

And we ask you to continue to bless us

with the benedictions of thy fatherly hands.

Through Jesus Christ, our Lord,

Amen

There is a landing on the stairway leading to the upstairs that overlooks the dining area. It is the place where I take our yearly picture and someone–sometimes dad pronounced the blessing.

Thanksgiving, holidays in general, are a benchmark of sorts. They hold space, mark time, and provide a snapshot of the time of our family. Our lives are in motion. We are always changing–sometimes growing–little Luka is a year old and his parents are expecting a sibling in June 2024. Sometimes lives fade and loved ones are no longer with us…this year my uncle Michael will not be with us.

I’m not sure how we will handle the blessing this year. Should I look up a pre-written, well-thought-out script? Should I speak off the cuff?

No.

I think this year, I will type out a copy of Dad’s standard benediction (nice and big) and give it to him for a backup.

That feels supportive and respectful. Dad’s ability to preside over the festivities this year is something we will all be thankful for.
