Girls Only!!

Girl’s weekend started twenty years ago.   Our wonderful friend, Bonnie, who is no longer with us physically, actually got us started.  I’m sure she is hovering with us as she would never have missed this chance to shop.

Anyone who wants to get away and have fun at one of the largest flea markets we know about is welcome to join us.  We go twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. The only criteria is for those who want to escape the drudgery of cleaning, doing laundry, paying bills “god forbid”, want to have fun, and enjoy the thrill of what I like to call “exploring”.   Men actually are welcome to join us even if they are not fully aware of this, and I’m certainly not going to reveal that little secret.  A couple of men dared to in the past, but they usually stay clear of this event.  Somehow getting up at 3 a.m. and freezing your ass off seems more fun to them.  Me, nothing can get me going at that time except for the birth of a grand-baby or a special shopping trip to fun and foreign places.

When we are asked what we are looking for, there is never a known answer.  You see, you won’t know you want it until you see it.  Who could possibly think they would come home with, or even want, a metal white turkey a cool fireplace screen, metal shutters, rusty garden art, cool wooden pieces, etc., that you hadn’t even thought about until you’ve seen it at the Flea market.  At the end of the day, it is always fun to get together and share what treasures we found.

You just need to have an open mind, a checkbook and/or cash!! and a thought as to how to get this -shit (as my husband calls it), a/k/a much-needed treasures, home.

I personally love these weekends as it gives me time to spend with friends and family, especially the little ones that can’t be left at home as I love snuggling with them for a whole uninterrupted weekend.

One time we actually were able to bring home in two vehicles, white wicker furniture for the cottage consisting of a couch, love seat, end table, footstool, coffee table, lounging chair, dining table w/four chairs, not to mention a whole lot of cushions.  Things were strapped to the top of our vehicles, and, of course, the cars and vans were stuffed to the max.

Usually, we have wonderful weather, but it really doesn’t matter as when you are driven by the need you don’t really notice the weather.  In the spring it gets us jump-started for spring.  In the fall, mums, pumpkins, gourds, corn husks, are all around and waiting to be stuffed into our vehicles.  Those who don’t even like flea markets come away with wonderful things and actually have a great time!!!  (Right Judy???)

After a couple of years, we discovered other wonderful shops to explore, so there is never enough money, time, or energy to go around.

Girls weekend is a must, I feel, and hope it goes on forever.
