Decorating Disaster

disastersRemember the pink-and-blue decorating craze? Somewhere between the sponge-painted walls and floral borders, we decided those two pastels were meant to be together. They crept into bedrooms, bathrooms, and even living rooms, and let us not forget kitchens.. And like everyone else caught in the wave of pastel mania, we jumped right in.

When we decided to decorate one of my youngest daughter’s college apartments, pink and blue seemed like a no-fail combo. It sounded cute and timeless in theory. In reality? It was hideous.

Every inch of that room screamed “cotton candy explosion.” The walls in this particular room were ghastly brown paneling.  Paint the walls?  Needed permission and none was given.  So, the more pink and blue accents that we could come up with just made things grotesquely worse.  The main stage of the bedroom

ended up being the headboard, which was retrieved from her child’s bedroom.  This carried the theme of blue and pink, and somehow it continued to gag anyone brave enough to enter this bubble gum confusion.

It was the kind of room that made your eyes blink twice when you walked in, not because it was beautiful, but because your eyes didn’t know what to do.

At the time, we thought it was adorable. Now, I just laugh and shake my head. Every decorating era has its “what were we thinking?” phase, and I believe this one tops them all.

I am told that sometimes the best part of style isn’t getting it right, it’s laughing about how wrong we got it. But being me (a proclaimed perfectionist), it actually troubles me that I let this disaster even happen.

Now, I realize every decorating era has its “what were we thinking?” phase. The pink-and-blue period was ours, a cheerful reminder that style changes, but good humor about our choices never should unless your style continues to be pink and blue.
