Almost Prosperous

prosperityThere have been times in my life when I thought I was this close to having it all together. I’d finally have the bills paid and a little money in the savings account… and then the car’s check engine light would start blinking and making a funny noise. I’d be feeling good for a week—eating better, getting some exercise—and then I’d have a doctor’s appointment and they’d say something “looks concerning.” I’d clean the entire house, light a candle, pour a glass of wine… only to see a mouse run through the living room.

For me, prosperity always seems just around the corner. Not lottery-winning prosperity—just the kind where the fridge isn’t empty, the bills are paid on time, and your back doesn’t twinge every time you stand up.

But lately, I’ve been trying to notice the ways I am prosperous.

All three of my kids live nearby. They answer when I call. They show up when I need help. My entire family is here in Beaver Dam—close enough for coffee, birthdays, dinners, and chaos. That’s not just luck. That’s wealth. That’s gold. That’s something you can’t put in the bank, but it keeps you grounded when everything else feels shaky.

I don’t feel prosperous—not the way TV and magazines sell it. My bank account may not be full, but my persistence is. I’ve learned to keep going, even when the road feels uphill. And I’m surrounded by people who love me. That might not be everything I thought prosperity would be—but maybe it’s exactly enough.
