Mirror, Mirror, Full of Streaks
When I hear people talk about buying a large, beautiful home, I always think the same things. I wonder how many bathrooms it has? My home has 1 l/2 baths with an unused bath in the basement. That means three toilets. More than three is a figure I don’t even want to think about.
I’m guessing that people with five or six bathrooms must have a housekeeper to come and clean for them. I can’t imagine cleaning all of those alone.
I try to keep my bathrooms clean as they are used. Sometimes this works, and sometimes it doesn’t. Every so often, I take everything out of the bathroom and scrub each piece from top to bottom. I must admit that I will never be awarded the Martha Stewart award for my housekeeping skills.
First of all, I am not fond of bathroom cleaning chemicals. They often have very strong odors and are toxic to the hands. I get started with my spraying and scrubbing, and I still am not satisfied with my results. The halogen lights above the sink cause streaks on the bathroom mirror. The sliding doors on the tub enclosure don’t look clean, no matter how hard I scrub, and the combination of hairspray and dust makes an almost impossible gunk that I have yet to find the magical solution for removal.
The only part of cleaning that I dislike more than doing it myself is having someone do it for me. It never meets my standards, and I end up doing it over anyway.
I hate leaning over the toilet bowl and reaching behind and along the sides. When I get done, it’s still not pristine. Cleaning bathrooms is a daily chore. You can skip a day, but frankly, it’s not worth the risk. Sometimes, it seems like the daily stuff builds up faster than the total of the two days that have passed.
So yeah, give me charm over square footage any day. I don’t need a spa wing, a bidet collection, or a cleaning crew on retainer. I just want one bathroom that doesn’t judge me, one mirror that lies a little, and maybe—just maybe—a toilet brush that works overtime without complaining. Dream big, they say. I dream of fewer bathrooms.
