Monopoly Madness

board gamesBoard games may seem like a thing of the past, but after discussing them with my fellow Sidetracked Sisters, I realized how important they were to our gatherings and childhood memories. It also became clear that we need to put away our phones, turn off the TV, and—dare I say—reinvent the wheel. In other words, it’s time to bring back game nights with family and friends.

I first learned to play Canasta with my Grandma Bauer and Aunt Anna. When the older generation was tasked with babysitting, board games—requiring no running or jumping—became the go-to entertainment. I have the sweetest memories of those two women and the hours we spent playing together.

In my immediate family, we didn’t often sit down to play board games together. So when the grandmas came over, games became our form of amusement.

Now, I must admit—I despise learning new games. I have no patience for instructions, which tends to frustrate those trying to teach me. Rather than an asset, I become an obstacle to the enjoyment of the game.

And speaking of frustration, let’s talk about Monopoly. If there is a game I truly loathe, this is it. When we were first married, we had plenty of downtime, and friends often suggested Monopoly. One night, as usual, I was losing—badly. I was forced to sell everything just to stay in the game, but my financial ruin felt all too real. The deeper in debt I went, the more defeated I felt. No, I didn’t cry, but I came close. The game dragged on endlessly, and I sank further into despair.

    1. Thus, a rule was established in my world: NO to “Let’s play Monopoly.”
