Talk is Cheap

curiosityI am a curious person. I don’t deny this trait.  I love to know about people and how they tick, and I just plain get to know them.  I have found that if you don’t ask questions of someone, you will not be able to find out who they are and what makes them tick.

I always had difficulty with small talk when being put in a situation where I had to meet new people.  Then I was told you should ask questions.  Not all people like to be questioned, but some find it nice that you are interested in them.  It starts with a conversation and usually starts a friendship.

Something I am always curious about is:  When you go on vacation or are out and about, don’t you wonder where these people are from, what kind of employment they have that enables them to have this free time and go on different and fun excursions?

Another thing is at work, when given a task in order to do the proper job, I wanted to know why we were doing this task and how.  Many times, I was told to “Just do it”.  This just didn’t do it for me.  Understanding the whys and wherefores helped me understand and do a proper job.

It’s really hard for me to be with someone who doesn’t like to talk.  I find that I talk twice as fast and just talk and talk.  This is exhausting for me.  I used to love to drive, for example, with my mother-in-law, Doris.  I only had to ask one question, and we were off for the day.  I loved this.  She was full of information and loved to share. This made the trip so much more enjoyable for me.  On the reverse, my mom would usually answer with one-word answers.  It made it hard to find out things about her and share ideas with her.

Then there are those people who love to talk so much you can’t get a word in, no matter how hard you try.  There is one person in our family who provides information before the question is even asked.

 Craig… take a breath.
